Sounds terrible doesn't it!!!!? It's not. Hofa Studios has a great free loudness meter plugin that measures LUFS as well as RMS etc.Ī clipper chops off peaks above a certain point - there's no compression component. I will press to vinyl before pressing to CD. But even then, CD is a dying, if not a dead format. Using a limiter to squish music to a crest factor of 3 doesn't make sense anymore, unless the release is going only to CD. Loudness needs to be managed as transparently as possible these days to a reasonable level like DR8/LUFS 13/RMS 0. At least the pro records still have a little bit of life in them because of the insane quality of gear that's used. When your songs are level matched like that against other music, the squashed home recordings normally sound much, much worse. Youtube especially has very conservative loudness limits. Why would you want anything super loud these days? It's just going to get turned down on youtube, Spotify, apple music etc anyway. If true peak concerns you it's the way to go as it's one of the very few true peak limiters that actually does what it says it's going to. I'm now using Waves WLM for my pro mastering work. Loudmax is a good one for set and forget. Most free limiters will probably do fine. I wouldn't really call it transparent personally. There's better free limiters if you want something super loud but it's still a good choice for sure.
